In the aftermath of conflict and natural disasters, water is one of most urgent and essential needs, from restoring the water supply to rehabilitating sanitation systems. After the Tsunami hit Southeast Asia in December 2004, it was thought that the death toll would double due to water-born diseases from lack of sanitation and a contaminated water supply. Due in part to the rapid response by the humanitarian community with water, food, and medical supplies, many countries hit hard by the Tsunami were able to avoid further casualties. By utilizing tools such as agrometeorological, seasonal-climate and extreme-event forecasting and more recently developed conflict early warning tools, emergency response teams are more prepared to rapidly and effectively respond to the needs of people affected by conflict and natural disasters.
