Ports and marinas management is concerned with the effective policies that allow for economic enterprise, sustainable coastal zone environmental impacts, and compliance with local, state and national laws. Port and marina dependent uses and businesses include international shipping facilities, mooring areas, yacht clubs, boat yards, commercial and recreational fishing operations, facilities for shipping petroleum products and aggregates, ferry landings, and various support facilities for waterborne commerce and recreation. Together these uses generate billions of dollars for local economies and are vital to the economic health and character of waterfront communities. Without effective port and marina management, ecosystems and local economies can be seriously damaged or destroyed.
