A form of ecosystem management, watershed management is a perpetual decision-making process that prioritizes and balances the uses and modifications of the entire watershed system from uplands and headwaters, to floodplain wetlands and river channels. Since watersheds tend to be densely populated and often susceptible to floods, watershed management schemes can focus on a broad range of objectives including land management, erosion control, as well as sedimentation and flood control, depending on the needs of each watershed. In recent decades, greater attention has been given to watershed inhabitants and their environment, to support rural development, while preserving water and land resources, and biodiversity.
Wetlands are important ecosystems with several beneficial functions. They are also central to the lives of many people in the rural communities of Southern Africa.
